Hydro-Québec is entering a new stage in the development of a smart grid, which, in the long term, will cut costs to customers. The company decided on an advanced metering infrastructure that requires the installation of 3.8 million next-generation meters. This new technological platform will allow billing based on actual consumption through remote reading. Customers will no longer have to fill in meter-reading cards when they move and service can be restored remotely. Watch the video to learn more.
The RF emission level measured 1 m away from a next-generation meter is approximately 55,000 times less than Health Canada limits. No matter how close you are to the meter, it’s safe.
Hydro-Québec will be able to read electricity-use data from next-generation meters remotely. Eventually, other remote applications like remote disconnection and connection when customers move will be possible with the new advanced metering infrastructure.
Hydro-Québec has implemented top-security safeguards, comparable to those used in the banking industry. The information transmitted by each meter is secure because it is encrypted.
